This Privacy Policy explains how The Spelling Bee Hub ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, stores, and protects information when you use spellbeehub.com (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to this Policy and our Terms of Service.
1. Information We Collect
We collect only the information reasonably necessary to operate an educational spelling practice service. "Personal information" includes personally identifiable information (PII) and other non-public information associated with an account or classroom.

We do not require students to provide more information than is needed for educational practice features.
2. How We Use Information
- To provide, maintain, and improve the Service.
- To save and sync progress across devices.
- To operate classroom features and, when enabled, subscriptions.
- To protect against abuse, fraud, and security threats.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We use information only for the purposes described above. We do not:
- Sell personal information.
- Use student data to advertise or market to students or their parents.
- Mine or scan user content for targeted advertising.
- Create student profiles for non-educational commercial purposes.
3. School and Student Data (COPPA & FERPA)
The Service may be used by schools, teachers, parents, and students. Where students under 13 use the Service, we rely on schools or parents/guardians to provide appropriate consent under COPPA, where required.
Where schools use the Service with student information that may constitute education records under FERPA, schools remain responsible for their compliance obligations. We act as a service provider and use student information only to provide the educational features requested by the school or teacher—not for unrelated purposes.
Schools and teachers may request access to student progress data for students in their classroom. Parents or guardians may contact us or their school to request access to or deletion of a child's information, consistent with applicable law.
4. Third-Party Service Providers
We use trusted subprocessors to operate the Service. They may process data on our behalf under contractual obligations consistent with this Policy:
- Google — OAuth sign-in and analytics.
- Stripe — payment processing (when paid plans are enabled).
- Inworld — AI text-to-speech for custom-word pronunciation.
- MongoDB Atlas — database hosting.
- Render and Cloudflare — hosting and content delivery.
We do not authorize subprocessors to use student personal information for their own advertising or unrelated commercial purposes.
5. Cookies
We use cookies and similar storage as follows:
- Necessary. A session cookie keeps you signed in and helps protect the Service. On-device storage (for example local word-list and progress keys such as
spellingBeeWords) is used to run practice features. These are required for the Service to work. - Analytics (optional). Google Analytics (
_gacookies) measures aggregate visits. We do not load Google Analytics or set analytics cookies until you click “Accept analytics.” You can choose “Necessary only,” and you can change this later from Cookie settings in the footer.
We do not use advertising or retargeting cookies. Analytics data, when enabled, is processed by Google in the United States.
6. Data Retention and Deletion
We retain personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. When an account is deleted or a school stops using the Service, we will delete or de-identify personal information within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law (such as billing or tax records) or for legitimate security purposes.

7. De-Identified Data
We may use aggregated or de-identified data (with direct identifiers removed) to improve the Service, understand usage trends, or maintain security. We do not attempt to re-identify de-identified data, and we do not share de-identified student data with third parties for their independent marketing purposes.
8. Data Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords for local accounts, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If we become aware of a security incident affecting personal information, we will take appropriate steps to investigate and notify affected users or schools as required by law.
9. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, or to object to certain processing. To exercise these rights, see Delete your data or contact support@spellbeehub.com.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. We will not materially change how we collect, use, or share student data without appropriate notice. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
